SDJA Fall Sports Wrap Up

As we finish up the fall season of sport, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge and honor all of our student athletes and coaches who dedicated their time and energy to making this a great fall season.  Please take a moment to view our fall sports highlight video below.

Cross Country

Both our boys and girls cross country teams have been growing in numbers and improving their times under the exceptional leadership of Coach Chambers.  Sophomore Brannigan Stone broke the boys 5k school record, setting the new record at 19:55.  On the girls side sophomore Jessie Gan is leading the pack placing 2nd in the Guajome Park time trial, 10th in the 2nd Pacific Cluster meet and posting a personal best of 23:53.  The Coastal conference finals will take place on Friday Nov. 9th and we look forward to an exciting finish to the season for both the boys and girls teams.

The girls volleyball program faced a setback early on with starting setter Tikva Velazquez being injured in the second game of the season.  With her out, the Lions pushed through a tough schedule and continued to grow and improve.  Junior Karla Vainer stepped up to lead the team earning herself 1st Team All-League honors in the process.  The Lions finished the season strong with big wins over league opponents Del Lago Academy and Foothills Christian.  The Lions will lose the senior leadership of Velazquez and Vivienne Blackburn, but return the rest of their starting squad and will look to pick up where they left off for the 2019 season.

Girls Tennis

Girls tennis continued to raise the bar this season by making school history in earning the first ever League Championship banner for the sport of girls tennis.  The team went 10-0 in league and 17-2 on the season.  With the steady leadership of senior Annabelle Simble and the dynamic play of freshman standouts Liora Langman and Kate Aizin the team came into CIF team playoffs as a 5 seed in Division 2.  The first round they faced a tough Mission Hills team and narrowly missed advancing, losing 10-8.  Congratulations to the girls tennis team on an amazing season and for earning the title of Pacific League Champions for 2018.

The success of the football team this season started in May with the strong turnout to spring football.  It was clear at that point the team was determined to push the limits and strive to do the one thing that has been eluding the SDJA football program for years, making playoffs.  The team was on track with two early wins against The Rock Academy and Horizon Prep.  However, with losses to both Calvin Christian and Foothills Christian the team needed to win its remaining league games to have a chance.  They did not disappoint with dominant victories over Calvary SD, Julian and West Shores.  The team earned a 3 seed in Division 6 CIF playoffs, making it the first time in eleven years the football program has advanced to the postseason.

The team took on Calvin Christian in the semi-final game this past Thursday night and narrowly pulled off an upset beating Calvin 36-30! The team will now play for the Commissioners Cup (8 man Championship) next Saturday 11/0, the time and location are yet to be determined.
