HOS Search Committee Update – 6/4/19

UPDATE 6/4/19:

Dear SDJA Community,

We are very pleased to report that our search for a candidate to fill Chaim’s very big shoes is well underway. We wanted to share with you what steps we have taken since our last communication, inform you regarding what to expect as this process unfolds, and let you know how you can be involved in this process (more on that below).

Expected Timeline

After assembling our search committee, our first step has been to select a search firm that will understand the unique needs and desires of our school and its constituencies.  We have selected DRG Search to assist us with this nationwide search. We chose this firm based on their successful placements of many Heads of Jewish day schools, and the fact that 40% of their placements are within the world of Jewish organizations.  They are well connected to both the educational community and the Jewish one, and we feel quite confident that they will bring us the best possible candidates. Their day school practice was developed almost 10 years ago, and within that time they have placed approximately 50 Heads in Jewish day schools.

We have been assured by DRG that our timing is excellent to find a candidate who will begin in the fall of 2020.  On June 4, representatives of DRG visited our school to tour and to speak to many of our constituents – including parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members, among others – about our desires and needs for the next Head of School.  After yesterday’s visit, they will produce a position summary and candidate profile that, once reviewed by the Search Committee, will be used to inform potential candidates.

Over the summer, DRG will develop candidates and conduct initial vetting to determine whether each candidate meets the requirements outlined in the position summary.   In the late summer/early fall DRG will present a slate of vetted candidates to the Search Committee.  The Search Committee will conduct a first round of SKYPE interviews to decide which of the candidates should visit us, after which we will select our semi-finalists to visit to the school, followed by a selection of finalists.  These finalists will be invited once again to visit us for an extended several day interview.  At this time we will invite faculty, parents, staff and other constituents to meet the finalists and to provide feedback to the Search Committee.  We are hoping for an enthusiastic response to invitations to meet these candidates!

It is our plan that our new Head of School will be chosen and confirmed by mid- to late-November.   We will then work with our faculty, staff and parents on a transition plan to ensure that our new Head is able to hit the ground running in August 2020.
