San Diego Jewish Academy Early Childhood Center Celebrates Opening of New Play Area
Families and Teachers Celebrate State-of-the-Art Playground, Place Mezuzah on Entrance Gate
San Diego – Children ran, swung, jumped, bounced, and did a lot more on earlier this month at San Diego Jewish Academy’s Early Childhood Center’s grand opening for its state-of-the-art new playground, a gift from a generous donor. With the opening, the ECC now offers its youngest participants opportunities for play, fun, and dynamic learning in all kinds of creative settings.
“The new playground will be a major part of our children’s personal growth and exploration, says Yael Edelstein, head of the ECC at San Diego Jewish Academy. “We learned from best-in-class examples of play structures that incorporate areas for both fine motor and gross motor development. We’re thrilled to have this for our families and know it will strengthen our ECC community and of course will be a lot of fun for the kids.”
With technology creating numerous benefits to society, it has changed the way young children play. With that in mind, the ECC staff and Domus Studio Architecture partnered together to create a Nature Inspired Playground that resembles the Great outdoors so children can freely explore the world around them.
“Our nature-inspired playground is a collection of natural materials that allows the children to climb trees, play in mud, run through the grass, jump off boulders and play with water combining the adventure and wonder of nature,” adds Edelstein. “Our focus was incorporating many opportunities for children to develop their gross motor skills and we included Berliner Play structure, Gecko Rock, Mud Puddle, Roller slide and Bumble bridge. We have included specific spaces for the teachers to bring the learning outdoors and incorporate different learning centers (music, science, book, blocks, art, sensory, etc) among nature.”
SDJA has between 100-120 children in its ECC program. The school recently launched its Open Door program that offers half price tuition for children in Kindergarten and 9th grade. Half price tuition continues for four years for those students as they matriculate into higher grades. SDJA’s vision in subsequent years is to offer half price tuition across all grades, removing cost as a barrier for a world-class private school education.
San Diego Jewish Academy is a pluralistic K-12 school with a beautiful 56-acre campus and with more than 550 students. SDJA’s Lower School recently was awarded the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Award for Academic Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, indicating test scores in the top 15 percent of all schools nationally. The school is in the midst of its $15 million Our Family is One Campaign, which, along with increasing affordability for more families, positions the school as a cutting edge and world-class learning environment. Our Family is One enables SDJA to retain and hire outstanding educators from California and beyond, and to expand resources and learning opportunities.
