Wonderful Things, By Chaim Heller, Head of School
As part of our planning for our science and STEM programs, we invited Dr. Ariel Heimann to visit us today. Dr. Heimann is the Director General of the Davidson Institute, the science education arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. The Weizmann Institute is one of the world’s leading scientific research centers, with Nobel prize winners and many accomplishments to its name. Dr. Jane Willoughby, our STEM director, visited Dr. Heimann this summer and Dr. Heimann wanted to come and see the science and STEM programs at SDJA for himself.
He liked what he saw at SDJA. “I saw wonderful things in the classrooms,” he said, “and your students are so serious and so polite, too.” Dr. Heimann was particularly impressed with our Project Lead The Way program in the elementary grades and found it exciting that our second graders were so curious and such independent workers. Dr. Willoughby brought teachers together throughout the day to discuss best practices with our visitor and when he left SDJA for his trip to Los Angeles, we agreed we would stay connected and that the relationship between our institutions will continue to grow stronger over time.
On another note, our students sang on live TV today to let people know about Shabbat San Diego. You can watch them on (and Like) our Facebook page. See you at the Challah bake and the Havdallah program Saturday night.
