SDJA Awards: Recognition of Scientific Excellence
The San Diego Jewish Academy formally recognizes its "young scientists" at the middle and high school levels with its own awards. These include the Lions Awards, the Rensselaer award, the Yehudit Sherman award and the Shillman Scholars.

Lion's Awards are given at the end of each academic year to students who excel in science and math. The medal award is presented to students who have distinguished themselves academically as well as exhibited excellent citizenship in the classroom.

The Rensselaer Medal merit scholarship with a minimum value of $15,000 per year is guaranteed for four years (five years for the School of Architecture program) to be applied to the tuition for each medalist who is accepted and chooses to enroll at Rensselaer.
For more than 90 years, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in conjunction with high schools around the world, has awarded the Rensselaer Medal. SDJA has been chosen as one of the high schools to participate in this program. The Medal was created in order to both recognize the superlative academic achievement of young men and women, and to motivate students toward careers in science, engineering, and technology. It is awarded to each high schools' most promising junior who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science. Responsibility for selecting the Rensselaer Medalist belongs to faculty and staff within the participating secondary school.

The Yehudit Sherman Award is presented to the middle school student who achieves the most outstanding success at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. The winning student receives a $500 monetary award and their name is engraved on a plaque held in the Upper School administrative office.

The Shillman Foundation's Distinguished Scholars program encourages and commends the pursuit of excellence in Mathematics and Science. Sponsored by the Shillman Foundation, students at SDJA who are awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in regional Mathematics and Science competitions or who achieve eligibility in the National Merit Student program, are named Shillman Scholars. Each year plaques bearing the named Shillman Scholars are displayed in the SDJA School offices. The Scholars are invited to an annual reception in their honor at the estate of Dr. Bob and Mao Shillman.

"The middle school science fair course was a very rewarding experience. It helped prepare me for high school by teaching me how to properly execute and develop a small hypothesis into a detailed and fascinating project."
