Field Trips
Annual class field trips encourage bonding with peers and faculty and explore curricular areas of study in the large “classroom” of Southern California. Middle school students explore areas of science in conjunction with their classroom studies. High school students experience Science and/or Judaic and Humanities-related trips including museums, cultural centers, Hillel houses at State Universities, presidential museums, and an optional enrichment trip to Washing D.C. The high school experience culminates with the seniors traveling to Prague, Poland, and Israel.

Catalina Island
Each year, seventh grade students take a trip to the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI). Students participate in a formal instructional program conducted by CIMI, which includes a wide range of activities such as snorkeling, hiking, and kayaking, as well as learning about wildlife, marine ecology and biology.

Yosemite Valley
In October/November the wonders of Yosemite Valley are in “full bloom”. This program is designed to give six grade students a chance to see Yosemite Valley and participate with professional guides in some of Yosemite’s most popular activities: hiking, geology, ecology, and team building. On this trip, students often develop a love of wilderness whereby their roles as “Shomrei Adamah” or "Guardians of the Earth” are realized
Tikkun Olam - Repairing the World
Participating in Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world, teaches students that we each have a responsibility to make the world a better place. Students learn that each individual working to do something good can lead to a community collectively making a difference in the world in which we live. Understanding what community means and feeling a sense of obligation to and respect for community are important goals at San Diego Jewish Academy. SDJA will often use current events and crises as learning opportunities to teach students that everyone has a responsibility to help when there is a problem or need.
Hevrat Tikkun Olam
Hevrat Tikkun Olam, “a group of friends repairing the world,” was launched to encourage students to become involved in community service. A steering committee comprised of two students from each of the upper school grades, and a parent and staff advisory board, are responsible for recruiting and organizing the year’s programs.
This past year, the group hosted a Chanukah party at Monarch School, a facility for homeless teens in Downtown San Diego. Students made hundreds of potato latkes and Chanukah cookies, and members of Academy on Stage entertained the teens with songs and dances. Also during Chanukah, Golda Meir Lower School joined forces with Maimonides Upper School Mexican Culture Club to help rebuild a synagogue in Cancun that was damaged by Hurricane Wilma. On the festival of Purim, upper school students performed holiday songs for the residents of Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Facility.
