News from the Principal
Dear Parents,
This week was officially Teacher Appreciation Week. Hopefully you found the time to show your appreciation in some way, shape or form, but if it slipped your mind, don’t fret, you can choose any day to appreciate our teachers! I would especially like to thank the PTO for sponsoring a wonderful breakfast on Wednesday morning and a mobile car-wash for all participating teachers on Friday.
SDJA, along with Jewish communities around the world, commemorated Yom Hazikaron on May 7. Just as in Israel, all activity stopped for two minutes as a siren was sounded. Later in the day, a commemorative torch was lit and the names of IDF soldiers killed or missing in action in Israel’s most recent wars was read, as well as a Mishabeirach for all of those who serve in the IDF.
Students and hundreds of guests on campus transitioned from the somber commemoration of Yom Hazikaron to the joyful prospect of Yom Haatzmaut, by singing Hatikvah, precisely at 10:50pm Israel time (12:50pm PST) in a global effort to create a record for the Guinness Book of World Records for the greatest number of people singing Israel’s National Anthem.
Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) was a half-day of school marked by parties and celebrations in Hebrew classes as well as an assembly for High School and Middle School students. They watched the documentary film, “Mechina-The Preparation”, created by an Israeli and focused on what Israeli youth and their families go through as the time for enlistment in the IDF nears. It was very poignant and powerful as grandparents from Israel’s War for Independence, parents from the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War, Uncles and Aunts from Israel’s War in Lebanon, and the young people that served in the Hezbollah War and those who currently serve all discussed the significance of Israel, the importance of a Jewish homeland, and the price to be paid to insure Israel’s existence. After the film, students had the opportunity to ask questions of the director.
I would like to remind you of The One Act Challenge for all students in the Maimonides Upper School (6-12). The challenge, to those wishing to participate, is to write and submit for review, a one act play. Completed manuscripts will be displayed in the Upper School Office. Every participating playwright will receive feedback and input from a panel of judges. Questions can be addressed to: oneactchallenge@gmail.com. The plays should be powerful, thought-provoking, meaningful, personal expressions and must be submitted by e-mail to oneactchallenge@gmail.com before midnight on May 16, 2008.
High school students, Prom is rapidly approaching on June 7th, please turn in your prom money to Brittany Hudson by May 19th. The cost for the dance is $35 per ticket.
B’ Shalom,
Jeffrey Davis, Ed. D. Principal, Maimonides Upper School
