Legacy Campaign
Legacy gifts ensure the financial strength of San Diego Jewish Academy for future generations by creating a perpetual stream of revenue for the school. Donors creating endowments, planned gifts or bequests become SDJA Legacy Circle members and their names are inscribed on the Pillars of Honor. SDJA is undertaking this initiative in conjunction with the Jewish Community Foundation's Create a Jewish Legacy Program. Endowments are established funds set aside in perpetuity to provide long-term revenue. They can be unrestricted, allowing SDJA maximum flexibility in determining funding priorities, or they can be restricted to fund a specific field of interest. Endowments begin at $5,000. Gifts over $100,000 are eligible to become named funds. Planned gifts enable donors to maximize their support to SDJA while realizing personal, financial and tax benefits. They can include such vehicles as Charitable Gift Annuities, Lead Trusts, Remainder Trusts and gifts of Life Insurance. Bequests are gifts that become available after the donor's lifetime and simply require the donor to name SDJA in their wills, designating either a specific gift amount or a percentage or share of the remaining estate.
Peter J. Chortek Fund for American Jewish Studies
Established in 2008 by Susan Chortek-Weisman, this gift honored her father and his passionate desire to teach students about the many diverse contributions made by Jews to American society. An integrated, multi-discipline, middle school curriculum was created and introduced to the sixth grade in 2009 and will continue to be built through 2011.
Liz and Isaac Calderon Fund for Jewish Studies
Established in 2008, with a lead gift from the Calderon family and additional gifts from the SDJA Legacy Sefer Torah Project, this fund provides students and community members the rare and privileged opportunity to create their own distinctive Jewish legacy by participating with Sofer (Scribe) Alberto Attia in creating a new Sefer Torah for the school which was completed in 2009.
Martin Kornfeld Family Zikaron V’Tikvah Fund
Established in 2006 by Martin Kornfeld and his son’s Rick and Gary, this fund is in memory of Phyllis Kornfeld, beloved wife, mother and grandmother. This gift supports the school’s nationally renowned Butterfly Project, which memorializes the 1.5 million children murdered in the Holocaust.
Shillman Foundation Distinguished Scholars Recognition Fund
Established in 2006, this gift from the Shillman Foundation commends and encourages the pursuit of excellence in mathematics and science. SDJA students who are awarded first, second or third place in regional mathematics and science competitions and students who are designated National Merit Scholars, earn the Shillman Scholar designation and attend an annual reception in their honor at the estate of Dr. Bob and Mao Shillman.
Chortek Family Foundation Fund
Established in 2004, this gift from the Chortek Family Foundation is intended to provide financial aid for students and ensure funding for the annual senior class trip to Israel.
Joseph Oppenheimer Financial Aid Fund
SDJA’s first endowment fund was established in 1999 by a gift from Joseph Oppenheimer to provide financial aid for students and to foster family-oriented Jewish education.
