San Diego Jewish Academy is proud to pay tribute to Gary and Jean Shekhter, long-time, valued members of the SDJA family. The Shekhters’ association with the Academy goes back nearly twenty years, when their son, Bobby, and then their daughter, Sarah, started kindergarten. The Academy not only played a major role in the lives of the Shekhter children, but of the entire family.
Gary and Jean came to this country from the former Soviet Union with little understanding of Judaism due to the anti-Semitic policies of the Soviet government. Moving to the United States gave them the opportunity to pursue a better life, to learn about their Jewish heritage and to practice it in freedom. SDJA gave the Shekhter children the building blocks for a strong Jewish identity, and Gary and Jean learned along with their children.
Grateful for all that their new country and community provided them, the Shekhters have been generous supporters of many Jewish institutions including Hebrew Home for the Aged, Jewish Community Center, United Jewish Federation, Jewish Family Service, Hillel and Jewish Community Foundation. Recognizing the very special role that SDJA played in establishing their family as Jews in America, the Shekhters were major supporters in the campaign to build the school’s Jaffe campus in 1999.
Gary and Jean Shekhter found a home in a new land that offered opportunity, freedom and a meaningful connection to their Judaism. They have benefited greatly from all that this community has to offer, and have generously given back many times over. Just as the Academy helped them build their new lives as Jews, they have helped SDJA become all that it is today. It is our privilege to honor the Shekhters for their invaluable contributions to the Academy and to the San Diego Jewish community.
