Executive Director Larry Acheatel joins SDJA’s first Annual Dinner honorees, David and Claire Ellman, November 17, 2001.
Claire and David Ellman have been tireless leaders in the San Diego Jewish community since moving here from South Africa, where they were also active community participants. Their involvement in Jewish organizations and institutions has grown to include major leadership positions in national and international Jewish organizations, as well as participation in the general San Diego community.
The Ellmans’ three children all attended SDJA. Claire is a former president of the Board of Directors, and David chaired the school’s first capital campaign in the 1980’s, which built SDJA’s junior high school. Their ongoing generosity built the Jaffe Campus’ Beit Knesset, and it was Claire’s meticulous oversight and insight that made it an exquisite center for prayer and visual inspiration.
