Environmental Awareness
SDJA wholeheartedly believes in the mitzvot of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), and Ba’al Tash’hit, (not to destroy), therefore SDJA, is committed to taking care of the environment wherever possible.

Environmental Awareness includes:
  • Making the plastic bottle recycling containers convenient and available throughout the campus and encouraging students to use them
  • Continuing to recycle paper in the classrooms
  • Encouraging students to bring “trash-free” lunches to school (i.e. use recyclable or washable containers rather than plastic bags or other throw away items)

Levana’s Edible Garden:
Levana’s Garden was dedicated in 2005 during the 25th anniversary of SDJA to honor the memory of Levana Estline, a beloved teacher who nurtured San Diego Jewish Academy kindergartners for 18 years and welcomed them every year with a teddy bear. Levana's Garden is an ornamental and edible garden. It has been shown that the more kids are involved in growing and learning about veggies the more they will eat them. It also teaches children to respect the planet and their bodies. Each week on Mondays we have "Garden Club". This is an evolving project that has kids from the 4th and 5th grade classes come during lunch to help plant, weed, water, harvest, dig and do all the things people do in gardens. We hope to continue and expand this to have other parent volunteers to not only guide the kids in gardening but have music, art, hand crafts such as knitting and a general respite area.

Our long term plan is to continue to grow food to be used by the schools lunch program. There is nothing more rewarding than to grow your own food and make great dishes from your labor. Every month or so on a Sunday we have a big volunteer Garden work day. Keep your eyes out for emails announcing the next family Garden work day.

Gardening is on ongoing and evolving process. Please feel free to stop by Levana's Garden to see for yourself. If you are interested in gardening or participating in other creative activities such as art or music in the garden, please contact our parent volunteer Leah Davida at Leahdavida@sbcglobal.net or our staff coordinator Debbie Kornberg at dkornberg@sdja.com.
